Celebrating Libraries by Christian Ratnam
Submitted by admin on Mon, 17/07/2006 - 21:23. :: Special Feature
A story submitted by Christian Ratnam (4N1) for the National Library Board's Celebrating Libraries Project has been selected for inclusion in a commemorative book! Read Christian's story below!
“Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counsellors, and the most patient of teachers.” (Charles W. Eliot). Indeed the quote is extremely true, flip through the pages of a book and you will realise that you have found a companion. You could be listening to an expert trying to impart to you his knowledge or be enjoying the climax of a great story. Even in this generation of computers and mobile phones, nothing has been able to relay useful information the way books do.
The realisation of this truth itself is enough to change one’s life, and I am glad it has changed mine. However this has not always been the case, there was a time when I hated books. Books were my enemies; it was a time when my father’s dialectical reasoning wasn’t enough to convince me on the importance of reading. I now realise that no amount of reasoning would have persuaded me if not for interest that was kindled within me the day I first picked up a book at the local national library. Looking back, it was actually a very simple concept that produced the allurement. It was none other than the salmagundi of books and the variety of different standards that created the effect. Before my encounter with my first book at the national library, books seemed to be thick stacks of papers containing nothing more than incomprehensible words. It was that very book that changed my concept. You must be awaiting the title of the book that changed my views on reading so drastically. The title of the book was ‘The Secret of Terror Castle’ by Robert Arthur, for readers familiar with the book it is the first book in a series of books entitled ‘The Three Investigators’. Everything about the book attracted me, from its simple text to its intriguing story. It happened to be the first book I read from cover to cover on my own accord, I was exceedingly proud of what to me was a startling achievement. That was it! Never again did I have to be nagged at to pick up a book, wherever I went a book followed me. I began to read everything I could get my hands on, and again there was not a better place I could feast on other than the national library.
From historical recounts to novels of all sort, I poured over every book which contained subjects that interested me. Books changed my view of life, my perceptions, the way I thought. I have never overlooked the fact that the national library has played a pivotal role if not the entire role of igniting my love for reading and teaching me a valuable truth. The truth that I could attain years of experience, by merely dwelling upon the pages of a book. It did not take me motivational courses to change my life; it took me a visit to the national library.
